When a homeowner has a backed up sewer line, many plumbing contractors say the line has to be replaced. Which means digging it up. Which also means a huge bill.

But not if the homeowner calls Vince Centracchio.

Centracchio, owner of Centracchio Sewer Contractors near Chicago, said only a small fraction of his customers actually need to replace their sewer lines. In more than 95 percent of the cases, Centracchio said he can cut out the roots, and then maintain the line with annual RootX treatments, saving customers “thousands of dollars.”

Centracchio has been using RootX since before it was called RootX, having bought the herbicide from the original inventor after a sales demonstration. He said he liked the concept of using foam to fill the pipe and reach all the roots. Today, Centracchio uses more than 1,000 pounds of RootX every year.

Centracchio registers his customers for the RootX annual reminder program, and he sends out his own reminders as well. Probably 90 percent of his customers respond, and some customers don’t wait for the reminder card before calling to schedule their annual treatment. “They schedule a service call because they don’t want any problems,” he said.

Current customers also send referrals. Those referrals may not be familiar with RootX, but once he’s explained what it is and how it works, “they’re very much interested because they don’t want to spend all that money to replace the line if they don’t have to,” Centracchio said. “If there’s no broken sewer line and it has a proper cleanout, we’ll put them on a maintenance program.”
With regular maintenance, mechanical cutting is needed less frequently, and the lines can be kept clear with RootX alone. “There are times when we can go several years without doing any cutting, just treating it with RootX,” Centracchio said.

As a service provider, Centracchio said he doesn’t want to give his customers a reason to go anywhere else, so any product he uses has to meet his demanding requirements, as well as those of his customers. RootX meets both.

“It’s been a good product; it’s been very successful for us,” Centracchio said. “If you put it in right and you service the sewer right, and people are diligent about having their lines treated, it clears the lines up.”
